Quiet Dust

Since the 1940s, the Navajo Nation Reservation has been the site of uranium mining, nuclear testing, and other extractive industries. To this day, soil, water, and ways of life remain shaped by the radioactive and toxic legacy of these policies. In a region where military service and mine work are often seen by young Navajo as almost the only available prospects, this project tells the story of people who choose a different path: they return to the agriculture of their ancestors, grow food, share knowledge, and develop, through traditional practice, a form of resilience that is economic, political, and spiritual. At the center is the young farmer Peshway Ben, whose community becomes the focal point of a story in which colonial history, environmental destruction, and the search for a "new (old) way" converge. The work is conceived as collaborative storytelling: image selection, context, and texts are developed as closely as possible in consultation with the protagonists and their community.
