Creating opportunities
for aspiring international
photographers

The Hamburg Portfolio Review (HPR) has become a key platform for emerging photographers and contemporary visual storytellers. Its mission is to connect the international photography community, foster collaborations, and spark dialogue around current photographic, social, and political issues. Each year, a jury selects 100 outstanding photographers to take part.

Selected photographers will have the opportunity to present their work to leading international experts from across the photography industry. The reviews are conducted virtually, with each participant meeting one-on-one with 4 out of more than 50 professionals representing a wide range of sectors. In addition, selected portfolios will be showcased in two exhibitions in Hamburg.

HPR is committed to giving a voice to aspiring photographers and offering visibility to their work by facilitating connections with publishers, media outlets, museums, festivals, foundations, universities, and institutions.

There are no restrictions on genre, though the focus is on narrative photography rather than commercial or advertising imagery.

What winners receive:

  • The opportunity to present and discuss their work with 4 of approximately 50 internationally recognized experts from diverse photographic fields

  • The chance to exhibit their projects in a curated group show

  • The potential to establish lasting connections with media houses, festivals, publishers, and foundations

  • A valuable platform to build a professional network and gain visibility within the global photography scene

The Hamburg Portfolio Review is hosted by the FREELENS Foundation, part of FREELENS e.V. Germany. It is kindly supported by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media, Canon and the Rudolf Augstein Stiftung.
